<p>A close friend of mine told me the story of how her brother almost  missed being at his brother’s bedside as he died because he was so  terrified of flying. Instead of flying in a commercial airline her  brother choose to drive 800 miles across three state lines. It took him  12 hours to get to the hospital, and the stress of driving had him on  the brink of physically illness. Luckily for him, he did get to see and  speak to his brother before his passing, but he did not get the intimate  interaction that his siblings had experienced being there before he  took a turn for the worse. To this day he looks back feeling ashamed  that he let his fears influence such a delicate decision, that could  have led to him being unable to get closure with his only brother before  he died.</p>
<p>His fears did not stem from a fear of the plane possibly being hijacked  or the fear of the plane crashing; instead his fear is of being trapped,  and the plane catching on fire, and a frightening scenario where he is  burned alive.</p>
<p><strong>What Is The Cause Of a Flying Phobia?</strong></p>
<p>He has never been in a burning plane, but when he was a child and meals  were still being served, one of the airplane’s meal heating units had an  electrical short which caused a burning smell in the airplane cabin.   As a young boy sitting next to his mother he began to worry shortly  thereafter, and soon the worry turned to fear, and the fear to sheer  panic. He sat white knuckled, clammy, nauseated, with his heart pounding  out of his chest until the plane landed, and then he never stepped back  on another plane for 24years. When his brother laying dying he was so  overcome with his flying phobia, or the anticipated fear he could not  bring himself to board a plane to see him.</p>

<p> Washington, July 29 (ANI): A report is out that hypnosis can not only reduce dementia symptoms, but as it turns out, also improve quality of life for people living with the condition according to a scientist at the University of Liverpool.</p>
<p> The study done by Dr Simon Duff, forensic psychologist, researched&nbsp; how people suffering with dementia&nbsp; who used&nbsp; hypnotherapy compared to treatment being usted in mainstream health-care methods.</p>
<p> This study indicated that people living with dementia who had received hypnosis therapy showed an improvement in concentration, memory and socialisation compared to the other two treatment groups. In fact, hypnosis also improved relaxation, motivation and daily living activities.</p>
<p> &ldquo;Over a nine month period of weekly sessions, it became clear that the participants attending the discussion group remained the same throughout. The group who received &rdquo;treatment as usual&rdquo; showed a small decline over the assessment period, yet those having regular hypnosis sessions showed real improvement across all of the areas that we looked at,  said Duff.</p>
<p> He added: &ldquo;Participants who are aware of the onset of dementia may become depressed and anxious at their gradual loss of cognitive ability and so hypnosis   which is a tool for relaxation   can really help the mind concentrate on positive activity like socialisation.&rdquo;</p>
<p> Now scientists will conduct further research to establish whether hypnosis maintains its effects on dementia over longer periods of time as the illness progresses.</p>
<p> <span><span>Dr Dan Nightingale, co-author of the research and leading dementia consultant at the Abacus Clinic in Newark , added: &ldquo;Evidence to date has shown that we can enhance the quality of life for people living with dementia through the correct use of hypnosis. I worked as an RN for many years until I injured my back, and was unable to perform patient care.&nbsp; Small amounts of blood I could deal with, but large amounts of blood is not normal, and sets of a fearful response in most people. <p> An intense fear of blood is a phobia that we treat fairly regularly here in our UK hypno-psychotherapy practice.</p>
<p> Like all other phobias, blood phobia is essentially an anxiety disorder.</p>
<p> The person suffering from a phobia of blood may very well sense that it is illogical, but this does nothing to help him or her to deal with it.</p>
<p> The thought or the sight of blood automatically triggers an irrational fear that seems to overpower the individual, psychologically and even physically.</p>
<p> It can produce a host of worrying symptoms such as dizziness, feelings of faintness, a sudden and rapid decrease in blood pressure, palpitations, dry mouth and nausea.</p>
<p> Medically speaking, blood phobia has several different names and is spelled in a variety of different ways: hemophobia, haemophobia, hemaphobia and hematophobia being the most common.</p>
<p> The actual causes of this phobia usually lie in the individual&#8217;s past.</p>
<p> At some period in the past, the subconscious has&nbsp; linked or paired the thought or the sight of blood with feelings of extreme anxiety.</p>
<p> Most often this has occurred in childhood or in the adolescent years, although less frequently it may have taken place later on in life.</p>
<p> This may have happened directly &#8211; as a result of a traumatic experience involving blood such as an accident or medical procedure in which blood was drawn, an injection, blood transfusion or the like.</p>
<p> It may also have happened indirectly &#8211; through someone else&#8217;s negative experience that was witnessed by the individual him or herself. Or it may have been modelled on someone else&#8217;s fear and anxiety and so learned vicariously.</p>
<p> There is also the possibility that in some individuals there is a genetic component or predisposition to this phobia, since it can be prevalent in other members of the family.</p>
<p> In my own clinical practice and professional opinion, however, this can also be ascribed to the child&#8217;s ability to model this fear on the anxiety of parents and relevant others.</p>
<p> Whatever the cause, the fact is that this phobia can greatly affect and even jeopardise the person&#8217;s health.</p>
<p> Often the blood phobic individual will go to great lengths to avoid any situation or procedure that may cause blood to flow.</p>
<p> Doctors, nurses, hospitals, injections and other essential medical procedures may all be avoided, even when there is a real need for them.</p>
<p> In certain instances, hemophobia is also linked with a phobia of needles (trypnophobia) and/or a fear of death (thanatophobia).</p>
<p> Any treatment for the fear of blood also needs to take this into account. This is why when treating this fear, you need to work with a practitioner who has experience with this particular phobia.</p>
<p> The good news is that help is available.</p>
<p> Working with a suitably qualified and experienced advanced transformational hypnotherapist, it is possible to look back and to uncover the origins and causes of his phobia.</p>
<p> Once this is accomplished, the false belief that has been &#8216;programmed&#8217; into the subconscious mind that blood equals anxiety can be neutralized.</p>
