<p> Fear is sometimes considered to be an integral element of the human psyche, keeping people from jumping into situations that can be considered dangerous or disadvantageous.&nbsp; However, there are times when fear can effectively cripple a person&#8217;s ability to do what needs to be done. This is particularly true if the fear comes in the form of anxiety disorders and phobias, which can sometimes be termed as being &ldquo;unreasonable,&rdquo; as compared to the more normal, &ldquo;reasonable&rdquo; fears.</p>
<p> Anxiety disorders and phobias, while distinct from one another, do have several common features. Both of them are considered to be an unhealthy fear. Both are considered to be psychological disorders, though it is generally accepted that phobias emerge from anxiety disorders.&nbsp; For sure, there are a number of factors that cause anxiety disorders and phobias. Anxiety disorders and phobias can be triggered by a number of stressful situations.&nbsp; But clearly, most studies indicate that anxiety disorders might take longer to form or develop as compared to phobias.</p>
<p> Some theorize that phobias are formed as part of the exaggerated aspect of the natural human survival instinct.&nbsp; Phobias are reactions to &ldquo;natural threats&rdquo; to a person&#8217;s well-being, for example, the fear of spiders or the fear of heights.&nbsp; The difference lies in the severity of the fear reaction.&nbsp; A phobia can totally paralyze or debilitate a person while having a simple fear will just elicit a response that does not necessarily interrupt a person&#8217;s normal functions.</p>
<p> In contrast, stress and anxiety takes a number of formative years to develop, or more appropriately, worsen before it affects a person.&nbsp; The stress and anxiety can actually lead to other phobias such as claustrophobia, the fear of closed spaces, and hexakosioihexekontahexaphobia &#8212;- which is the irrational fear of the number 666.</p>
<p> According to some psychologists, stress and anxiety combined with external triggers and internal factors that impact on an individual&#8217;s psyche can cause phobias. There are some who believe that anxiety disorders are not constant and can generally be treated with medication, whereas phobias are generally believed to require extensive therapy.&nbsp; In reality, no credible, verifiable studies have produced results to back up this claim . Very little information is available and the research on the subject matter do not necessarily refute some of the existing theories.&nbsp;</p>
<p> Interestingly, a number of modern &ldquo;phobias&rdquo; are highly social in nature, perhaps reflecting the growing sense of status anxiety and social anxiety people feel. These particular phobias are generally considered to be non-clinical and are mere signs of mild social disorders that cannot be categorized as phobias. Most experts view these new &ldquo;phobias&rdquo; as little more than signs of people developing social anxiety and status anxiety as a result of ignorance or misinformation. There are also some that carry discriminatory undertones, such as a &ldquo;phobia&rdquo; that centers around the fear of Christianity and the various Christian denominations.</p>
<p> Social class and nationality also seem to be linked to the new generation of these so-called phobias, eliciting worries of national-level status anxiety in the face of expanding globalization. Social anxiety is also hinted upon, with people starting to become more and more anxious about the increasing upward mobility available within various social and economic structures. There are some that have theorized that people are starting to develop an instinctive fear of what is sometimes seen to be rapid social restructuring, linking to a more personal form of status anxiety than the large-scale example cited above.</p>

<p>An intense fear of blood is a phobia that we treat fairly regularly here in our UK hypno-psychotherapy practice.</p>
<p>Like all other phobias, blood phobia is essentially an anxiety disorder.</p>
<p>The person suffering from a phobia of blood may very well sense that it is illogical, but this does nothing to help him or her to deal with it.</p>
<p>The thought or the sight of blood automatically triggers an irrational fear that seems to overpower the individual, psychologically and even physically.</p>
<p>It can produce a host of worrying symptoms such as dizziness, feelings of faintness, a sudden and rapid decrease in blood pressure, palpitations, dry mouth and nausea.</p>
<p>Medically speaking, blood phobia has several different names and is spelled in a variety of different ways: hemophobia, haemophobia, hemaphobia and hematophobia being the most common.</p>
<p>The actual causes of this phobia usually lie in the individual&#8217;s past.</p>
<p>At some period in the past, the subconscious has  linked or paired the thought or the sight of blood with feelings of extreme anxiety.</p>
<p>Most often this has occurred in childhood or in the adolescent years, although less frequently it may have taken place later on in life.</p>
<p>This may have happened directly &#8211; as a result of a traumatic experience involving blood such as an accident or medical procedure in which blood was drawn, an injection, blood transfusion or the like.</p>
<p>It may also have happened indirectly &#8211; through someone else&#8217;s negative experience that was witnessed by the individual him or herself. Or it may have been modelled on someone else&#8217;s fear and anxiety and so learned vicariously.</p>
<p>There is also the possibility that in some individuals there is a genetic component or predisposition to this phobia, since it can be prevalent in other members of the family.</p>
<p>In my own clinical practice and professional opinion, however, this can also be ascribed to the child&#8217;s ability to model this fear on the anxiety of parents and relevant others.</p>
<p>Whatever the cause, the fact is that this phobia can greatly affect and even jeopardise the person&#8217;s health.</p>
<p>Often the blood phobic individual will go to great lengths to avoid any situation or procedure that may cause blood to flow.</p>
<p>Doctors, nurses, hospitals, injections and other essential medical procedures may all be avoided, even when there is a real need for them.</p>
<p>In certain instances, hemophobia is also linked with a phobia of needles (trypnophobia) and/or a fear of death (thanatophobia).</p>
<p>Any treatment for the fear of blood also needs to take this into account. This is why when treating this fear, you need to work with a practitioner who has experience with this particular phobia.</p>
<p>The good news is that help is available.</p>

<p> The fight or flight response is our body&acute;s natural way of protecting itself from the dangers of this world. If a wild grizzly bear is chasing you, you run. Your body does it automatically. If your child is drowning, you jump in after them. You don&acute;t think about it, your body just goes into action. &nbsp;</p>
<p> Your body determines whether it&acute;s best to fight or react or run. For people who have this adrenaline surge triggered, it is normally in response to appropriate situations. For phobia sufferers, this response kicks into action inappropriately, triggering panic attacks. The anxiety episodes are so upsetting, that many people strive, regardless of the consequences, to avoid a repeat performance.</p>
<p> This is what keeps phobic&acute;s from engaging in life; the fear. The extreme, unchecked and inappropriate response of their bodies is upsetting and humiliating and very few people want to knowingly expose themselves to an increased chance of a panic attack. Therefore, caution, no matter how silly or intrusive, is usually the most common path taken when confronting this problem.</p>
<p><strong><br /> <font size="3">Social phobia</font></strong><br /> <strong><br /> Social phobia</strong> which is also referred to as social anxiety disorder limits a person&acute;s social interactions and causes intense, uncomfortable sensations when a person is exposed to social situations. This problem can prevent you from speaking in front of others, attending cocktail parties or receptions or even eating in front of other people.</p>
<p> The fear for a sufferer is that they will be perceived as strange, stupid or completely crazy. These fears are often completely unfounded but still overwhelming and profound.</p>
<p> Social phobia can be generalized and extend to a wide array of social situations or it can be specific. A specific problem, that is fairly common, is paruresis. These sufferers find it extremely difficult, if not impossible, to go to the bathroom in front of others or within earshot of anyone else.</p>
<p><font size="3"><strong>Agoraphobia</strong></font></p>
<p> <strong>Agoraphobia</strong> is another common and potentially very serious condition. Agoraphobia is technically the fear of open spaces but it really is the fear of having a panic attack in a place or situation where you do not have help or assistance readily available.&nbsp; Agoraphobia is a condition that frequently develops in panic attack sufferers because they are worried about going places or doing things where they will have an anxiety attack.</p>
<p> Agoraphobia sufferers fear leaving home or the places they are familiar with. They don&acute;t want to be alone in tunnels, on bridges or in any exposed venue where help will be hard or humiliating to attain. In its most extreme form, agoraphobia sufferers will refuse leaving their home, terrified of what will happen to them if they do. &nbsp;</p>
<p> The subjects that social phobia and agoraphobia suffers fear are common in a lot of people. Many people would prefer not speaking in front of a crowd; many people are afraid of bridges and tunnels and get nervous in these places. For most people these feelings are transitory and also easily conquered. &nbsp;</p>
<p> They push those feelings aside and go on with their lives. They stumble through the presentation, the speech in front of the crowd, the drive across the bridge. What separates these people from anxiety sufferers is the intense desire and need to avoid these situations at all costs.</p>
<p> Taken to the extreme, avoidance can lead to loss of your job, disruptions in your family life and leading an unfulfilled and scared life. This is not an appealing way to live and every effort should be taken to address your fears. Finding relaxation outlets for your stress will be one great step forward in addressing the needs of your body and mind and ending your battle with apprehension, angst and depression.</p>
