My family had rented a furnished house for the summer, and the room I slept in had clown pictures. Not little pictures, but life size clown pictures on three walls. The life size faces were not particularly scary, but the eyes eerily followed me everywhere I went. I took to covering my head at night with a pillow so I could sleep. I begged my mother to take the pictures down, but she refused. Sometimes they start  when we are very young, and never go away, other times we develop them  as adults. However, every now and then our fears can go beyond being  fearful, and catapult us into the realm of Phobias. These fears can  become so intense and irrational creating fear that is so strong they  bring on a panic attack in a person. Phobias can be quite destructive if  left unchecked, and allowed to grow. They can be so intense that they  obstruct a person’s capacity to socialize, function at work and in  severe cases live a normal life.</span></span></span><br />

<strong>Some Anxiety Is Normal And Healthy</strong></span></span></span></p>

Phobias can be very hard on children as well, with fears of the dark, monsters seeming to be normal they can go beyond normal and develop into situations where the child cannot attend school or leave their house.</span></p>
<h3><strong>Phobias are what is known as “anxiety disorders” and they can be divided into three basic types:</strong></h3>

<li> Agoraphobia is a fear of being trapped somewhere that help might not be obtainable. It typically involves fear of crowds, elevators, bridges, sporting events, lines, public transportation, driving, shopping and flying in airplanes. This type of fear can be very difficult for if someone has a fear of driving they may have difficulty getting to work, fear of lines could prevent someone from going to the grocery store for food, and if they have claustrophobia they may experience so much stress leaving the house that their fear takes over, and they are housebound afraid to venture outside their front door.</li>

<li>Specific phobias revolve around the fear of a specific object or situation, and could include fear of spiders, fear of snakes, fear of the dark, fear of bees, fear of  insects, fear of childbirth or other specific fears and individual might have. If the specific phobia is a rare occurrence a person’s life may not be altered dramatically, but if the fear is something encountered daily, it can mean being exposed to high levels of stress that are very unhealthy.</li>

<li> Social phobia is fear in public situations. Social phobias are more than occasional nerves or feeling shy.  People who suffer with social phobias have such a strong intense fear of embarrassing themselves they will go to great lengths to avoid situations that could prompt a panic attack. Job interviews, parties, family gatherings, public speaking, or meeting with a child’s teacher are triggers that could bring a person to a halt unable to function.</li>

<p>The symptoms of phobias or intense fears can be triggered by simply expecting the event or circumstance to happen, and can include some or all of these symptoms: a sense of impending doom, or disaster. Heart rates increases, breathing become rapid, feeling nauseated, feeling faint, the powerful need to flee, and sweating of the palms, face and underarms can take place.<br />

Instead of flying in a commercial airline her brother choose to drive 800 miles across three state lines. It took him 12 hours to get to the hospital, and the stress of driving had him on the brink of physically illness. Luckily for him, he did get to see and speak to his brother before his passing, but he did not get the intimate interaction that his siblings had experienced being there before he took a turn for the worse. To this day he looks back feeling ashamed that he let his fears influence such a delicate decision, that could have led to him being unable to get closure with his only brother before he died.</p>
<p>His fears did not stem from a fear of the plane possibly being hijacked or the fear of the plane crashing; instead his fear is of being trapped, and the plane catching on fire, and a frightening scenario where he is burned alive.</p>
<p><strong>What Is The Cause Of a Flying Phobia?</strong></p>
<p>He has never been in a burning plane, but when he was a child and meals were still being served, one of the airplane’s meal heating units had an electrical short which caused a burning smell in the airplane cabin.  As a young boy sitting next to his mother he began to worry shortly thereafter, and soon the worry turned to fear, and the fear to sheer panic. He sat white knuckled, clammy, nauseated, with his heart pounding out of his chest until the plane landed, and then he never stepped back on another plane for 24years. When his brother laying dying he was so overcome with his flying phobia, or the anticipated fear he could not bring himself to board a plane to see him.</p>
<p>Fear Of Flying May Not Be The Only Thing Keeping Your Grounded…..</p>
<p>The fear of flying can be a combination of fears. If you suffer with the fear of flying, you may also unknowingly suffer from other phobias as well. <p>This is a question that crosses every parents mind, how to broach the subject in a way that will help the child create as little stress as possible, and yet honor the loss and not treat their feeling and their grief as insignificant.  It is important to remember that the emotional and physical connection between a person and their pet can be just as strong and meaningful as those established between human beings. The loss that you or your child is feeling for your beloved animal is no different than the loss you would feel your loss a dear loved family member, or friend.</p>

<p>Communicate with your child at their level of understanding using word they understand, but if your pet was euthanized many therapist do not recommend you tell the child the pet was “put to sleep”. Young children may think that they may die too, if they go to sleep.</p>
<p>It is important to understand that a young child from 2 to 4 years of age cannot grasp the permanence of the pet’s death. You may well find yourself responding over and over to a young child’s question about when the “pet” is coming home, while an older child can understand the permanency of death and that that their beloved pet is not coming back.</p>
<p><span style="color: red; font-size: medium;"><strong><br />
2.    Staging A Memorial &#8211; How will you honor your pet’s memory?</strong></span></p>
<p>However you choose to honor your pet&#8217;s memory, do it with your child participating by your side is an important part of the healing process.</p>
<p>Having a bench, a headstone, or a rock with the pet’s name on it that the child can visit gives them a sense of the animal being important, and can help children move on, while still being able to hold on to their beloved pets memory. Note: The memorial does not have to be where the animal has been buried.</p>
<p>If cremation is planned having a ceremony and burying the ashes with a beloved pet toy, or bedding can help give a child a sense of peace as well.  Plant a tree or a bush in your pets honor can be helpful too. Loved and never forgotten is important to children and adults.</p>
<p>Listen when your child wants to express their feelings about the loss of a pet. Sometimes small children who do not have the communication skill may express their grief as anger or acting out. Using other forms of communication such as drawing pictures together, role playing with toys, allowing the child to water the tree that you planted, or take flowers to the memorial area can help them express their feelings.</p>
<p><span style="color: red; font-size: medium;"><strong>3.    Helping you and your child move on-</strong></span>Don’t rush out to replace your pet. Give you and your family time to grieve, or you may not make a great decision on the “right pet” for your family.  If you had an older dog, a young puppy may not fit into your lifestyle. Perhaps your family may need to consider exactly the type, size and breed that would be best.<br />
Timing for getting a new pet of course depends on the person, or family. There are no set rules about it, but seeking a new companion is a lifelong commitment, and should not be made in haste.</p>
