You Can Overcome your Fear of Clowns
“When I was small I remember having a horrible fear of clowns, and I can tell you exactly when it started. My family had rented a furnished house for the summer, and the room I slept in had clown pictures. Not little pictures, but life size clown pictures on three walls. The life size faces were not particularly scary, but the eyes eerily followed me everywhere I went. I took to covering my head at night with a pillow so I could sleep. I begged my mother to take the pictures down, but she refused. I eventually started sleeping on the sofa, and refused to go into the bedroom without someone else with me.” It haunts me to this day, and I guess you could say I have a phobia of clowns, says Denise.
Having a fear of clowns is also known as Coulrophobia , and it is more common than most people think. If you have this type of fear or phobia you may experience panic like symptoms such as rapid heart rate, sweating, stomach pains, chest pain, or the overwhelming need to flee. Symptoms can vary, but if your fear is overwhelming, and is controlling you it can disrupt your life.
Most therapist will tell you that the best, and easiest way to overcome your fear of clowns is by confronting your fear. This might sound scary but its probably the most effective way. Sometimes not being able to see the face behind the makeup causes anxiety to some children and adults. The common explanation of coulrophobe is some early childhood traumatic event such as the one above, and sometimes clowns are depicted in movies as objects of horror and can imprint in a negative way in impressionable people. However for most people, clowns are seen as a form of entertainment and do not make them feel frightened or physically uncomfortable.
To overcome the fear of clowns, you should start by trying to understand the role of a clown in your community. Clowns are just normal people like me and you dressed up in big clothes and funny makeup. Clowns are meant to be funny and bring happiness.
